Google announced a very important new feature called Virtual Card Numbers for Chrome users, whether on computers or Android, a feature that would provide more security in making payments via Chrome, during the keynote at its annual Google Developers Conference I. /O 2022 , the conference that this year witnessed the unveiling of a wide range of new devices and features for Google services and applications, including the unveiling of the new smartphone Pixel 6A and the company’s first smart wristwatch called the Pixel Watch.

The new feature allows users not to share the actual number of their credit or debit cards during payments or purchases on the web, when using the auto-fill system built into both Chrome and Android browsers, as the feature provides virtual or temporary numbers for cards during Payments and Purchases Virtual Card Numbers.

Google says that the new feature will help facilitate secure purchases on various sites that do not support fast and secure payment options such as Google Pay or Apple Pay and others. 

Chrome users will not need any extra steps to take advantage of the virtual card numbers feature

Chrome users will not need to take any additional steps to take advantage of the new feature, as the feature is available through the same autofill experience in Chrome that keeps user information and then automatically fills it in the required fields while signing in to an account on a site or paying and buying from a site, but With an additional layer of security, where the site or store from which the user purchased something will not obtain the bank card number, which prevents the misuse of this sensitive personal information, and also prevents the leakage of this data in the event that one of the stores or sites is exposed to a security breach that resulted User data theft, and according to Google, the virtual bank card number is only used for a specific transaction, but it may support recurring transactions such as using to pay to subscribe to a service. 

Google said that the virtual card numbers feature only needs approvals and procedures similar to Google Pay and other payment services, as the virtual card numbers from Google will work on any site that supports payment through bank cards, and the company also confirmed that it will not receive any fees when using the feature, This means that sellers will not give away a portion of their profits and Chrome users will not need to reveal their credit card numbers to be able to make purchases on the web. 

The virtual card numbers feature in Chrome now supports Capital One cards, but Google confirmed that it will add support for Visa, MasterCard and American Express cards.
