A new report from Bloomberg reveals that Mike Rockwell, Apple’s new chief development officer for Siri , has begun implementing sweeping changes across management and technical teams to accelerate development of Apple Intelligence features after their launch fell behind schedule .
Rockwell, who previously led the development of Apple’s Vision Pro glasses, took over Siri in March, succeeding John Giannandrea, who was moved to focus on artificial intelligence research.
According to the report, Rockwell is hiring a number of Vision Pro engineers to replace current Siri managers, in addition to restructuring the teams responsible for voice, command understanding, performance, and user experience.
Notable changes include the appointment of Ranjit Desai, who led the Vision Pro engineering teams, to oversee Siri’s architecture and system engineering, and the appointment of Olivier Gutknecht, director of Vision Pro, to lead Siri’s user experience design.
The company informed its employees that these changes are designed to ensure the company’s AI development goals are met, especially since the new members are among Apple’s most prominent software engineers.
Rockwell continues to oversee development of the visionOS operating system for the glasses, while John Ternus, vice president, oversees the hardware division.
Under Rockwell’s leadership, Apple is rebuilding Siri using large AI models (LLMs), aiming to simplify the underlying technologies and significantly improve the assistant’s functionality. The company is working with third-party app developers to ensure Siri’s deep integration with apps, ensuring these features are ready before the scheduled launch.
These changes indicate that Apple intends to transform Siri into a smarter, more interactive personal assistant, with capabilities based on generative AI, in the hope of catching up with, and even surpassing, its competitors in this field.
