Digital twins play a central role in NVIDIA’s platforms for the development of autonomous robots and vehicles. But use cases for medical digital twins face several significant regulatory, technological, and privacy hurdles.

In this context, NVIDIA has introduced Clara Holoscan MGX ™ , a platform for the medical device industry to develop and deploy real-time AI applications at the edge, purpose-built to meet required regulatory standards.

Clara Holoscan MGX expands on the Clara Holoscan platform to offer a comprehensive, medical-grade hardware reference architecture and long-term software support to accelerate healthcare innovation. It brings a new level of sensor innovation to edge computing by processing high-rate data streams for real-time insights. From robotic surgery to the study of new approaches to biology, surgeons and scientists need medical devices to evolve into continual detection systems to enquire and treat disease.

“Implementing real-time AI in health and life sciences is critical to breaking new boundaries in robotic surgery, diagnostics and drug discovery,” said Kimberly Powell, vice president of health at NVIDIA. “Clara Holoscan MGX, with its unique combination of AI, accelerated computing, and advanced visualization, accelerates AI production and provides software-as-a-service business models for the medical device industry.”

As part of the Clara Holoscan MGX, NVIDIA provides long-lasting hardware, 10 years of software compatibility, and the necessary tools to help device companies seek regulatory clearance, including documentation assistance for IEC 62304 compliance. and IEC 60601 , two key international safety standards for medical devices.

ADLINK, Advantech, Committed Computing, Kontron , Leadtek , MBX Systems, Onyx Healthcare, Portwell , Prodrive Technologies , RYOYO Electro, and Yuan High-Tech will be the first embedded computing manufacturers to develop products based on the Clara Holoscan MGX reference design to meet with the needs of the global medical device industry.

The Clara Holoscan platform is already being used by the largest medical device manufacturers and dozens of robotic surgery and digital surgery startups.

Product specifications

Clara Holoscan MGX brings together the NVIDIA Jetson AGX Orin high-performance industrial module ™ , the NVIDIA RTX GPU ™ A6000 and the NVIDIA ConnectX-7 ® SmartNIC network adapter in a scalable AI platform that provides 254 to 619 trillion operations per second of AI performance.

For high-throughput instruments, ConnectX-7 provides up to 200 GbE bandwidth and a GPUDirect® RDMA path for GPU processing, allowing it to be accelerated. It also adds the latest in integrated security with a security module, consisting of drivers to monitor critical operations, provide remote software updates and system recovery, and a hardware root of trust to supply next-generation integrated security.

Medical device manufacturers can integrate the Clara Holoscan MGX directly or connect to the existing medical device install base, allowing developers to accelerate AI deployment and regulatory clearance.

The Clara Holoscan SDK was specifically designed for high-performance streaming applications that enable the development of the next generation of software-defined instruments. It brings together pre-trained models, as well as a framework for scalable microservices, to enable applications to be managed and deployed both on the device and in the edge data center, enabling the software-as-a-service business model for the industry.

Clara Holoscan ranges from medical devices to NVIDIA edge servers and NVIDIA DGX systems in the cloud and in data centers.
