Habits aren’t destiny. They’re science, one which can transform our businesses, our communities, and our lives. By Charles Duhigg, the writer of the book.

Our brain is a habit building machine. The basal bride usually takes charge. It is important to say that The Power of Habit is in part a business book. This is not unusual, given the fact that the work culture we see today often delves into psychology as a way of understanding what is happening not only in the minds of their employees – they read, the individual – but also in the organization. In fact, Duhigg takes it even further in the cosmic continuum to apply how habit affects us at a societal level.

The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business is a book by Charles Duhigg, a New York Times reporter, published in February 2012 by Random House. It explores the science behind habit creation and reformation. The book reached the best seller list for The New York Times, Amazon.com, and USA Today.

What is The Power of Habit’s “Habit Loop”?

The concept of The Habit Loop is one of the main takeaways from The Power of Habit.

The process of forming a new habit is a three-step loop:

  1. Cue – a trigger that tells you brain to go into automatic mode and which habit to use
  2. Routine – which can be a physical or mental emotion. Ie. you do something each time you are triggered by the cue.
  3. Reward  – the thing you get from doing the habit. This helps your brain figure out if this particular loop is worth remembering for the future.
