BT today announced a new Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based solution to help businesses achieve their sustainability goals by optimizing energy use in their operations. This launch is the latest step in the BT Group Manifesto commitment to help its customers reduce 60 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions by 2030.

QiO Technologies’ Foresight OptimaTM AI technology combines the latest in machine learning with BT Edge Compute devices. Businesses can also take virtue of the broader capabilities of BT’s digital industries, such as IoT (Internet of Matters), cloud and secure connectivity, all in a unmarried managed solution.

The new solution brings together real-time data from IoT sensors, machine control settings, databases, outside data, and energy sources to identify variables that can be optimized to reduce energy consumption, and it can also help improve quality, productivity and other relevant factors.

The resulting Energy Efficiency Ratio (EEI) looks at previous process configurations and compares them to see which were more energy efficient and why. You can also compare facilities and equipment to find best practices.

The solution is hosted on a BT Edge Compute appliance, which ensures data can be securely processed by AI close to where it is created. BT securely connects the device to all applicable systems, hardware and assets to provide full visibility of the process being measured. In addition, the connectivity options include the private 5G network.

QiO AI has been successfully implemented in a wide range of industries, such as glass, steel, cement and automotive, among others, and has saved between 5% and 15% of energy. For example, the implementation of QIO at a major glass manufacturer reduced energy consumption by 6% and carbon emissions by 21,600 tons.

“I think we have a very important role to play in tackling the climate crisis. By partnering with customers, we can help them achieve net zero carbon emissions,” said Hriday Ravindranath, Chief Product & Digital Officer, Global, BT.

“Data is the key,” he added. “Too many organizations still collect carbon data manually, making reporting difficult and limiting its usefulness for improving operations. Our solution securely collects data and, thanks to QiO AI, recommends measures to optimize processes.
Moreover, customers can use this data to report on their performance in a standardized way. It is a great example of how we are meeting our Manifesto commitments and connecting to accomplish common goals.”

“Our partnership with BT will bring the benefits of QiO Foresight OptimaTM to heavy and energy-intensive industry to help meet grid zero and sustainability goals,” said Rick Haythornthwaite, President and Co-Founder of QiO Technologies. “Combined with BT’s industry knowledge and connectivity expertise, we can accelerate the delivery of energy efficiency, reduced carbon emissions and cost savings to organizations globally.”

A new fabric developed by researchers at Imperial College London (ICL) could dramatically reduce the cost of perovskite solar cells.

“The sun is the most abundant renewable energy source on the planet. Our research proposes to harness this potential by developing solar cells. This can be achieved, for example, by creating new cells that use polymers of small dye molecules to absorb light and convert it into electricity, or by designing systems that mimic photosynthesis, through our multidisciplinary ‘leaves artificial,'” the researchers write .

Traditional solar cells are made from silicon, which has good efficiency and stability, but is relatively expensive to fabricate and can only be produced in rigid panels.

Perovskite solar cells are an alternative that can be printed from inks, making them low-cost, high-efficiency, thin, light and bendy. However, they have fallen Bum silicon solar cells in efficiency and are prone to breaking down under normal environmental conditions. New metal-containing materials called ferrocenes could help alleviate many of these problems.

Professor Nicholas Long, co-author of the study, said: “Silicon cells are efficient but expensive and we urgently need new solar power devices to accelerate the transition to renewable energy. Stable and efficient perovskite cells could enable solar energy to be used in more applications, from powering developing countries to charging a new generation of portable devices.”

Perovskite forms the “light-harvesting” layer of solar cell devices, but it is less efficient at converting solar energy into electricity than silicon-based solar cells, mainly because electrons are less “mobile,” that is, they have less ability to pass from the collecting layer to the electricity conversion layers.

Ferrocenes are compounds whose center is iron, surrounded by rings of carbon. This constitution allows electrons to move more easily from the perovskite layer to the next ones, which improves the efficiency of the conversion of solar energy into electricity.

In tests conducted by the researchers, it was shown that the efficiency of perovskite devices with an added ferrocene layer can reach 25%, approaching the efficiency of traditional silicon cells.

The efficiency and stability achieved by adding a ferrocene layer bring these perovskite devices closer to current international standards for traditional silicon cells.

Imperial College London (ICL) highlights that his team is the first to elevate the inverted perovskite solar cell to a record efficiency of 25%. ICL has patented the design and hopes to obtain a license to commercialize perovskite devices. Meanwhile, they are experimenting with different ferrocene designs to further improve the performance and stability of the devices.

Cisco on October 14 introduced two new cloud-managed sensor solutions that help businesses simplify asset and facility monitoring across their organizations, from indoor IT cubicles to outdoor Operational Technology (OT) spaces. ) to scale.

Numerous companies currently operate in commercial buildings with limited capacity and are in favor of a growing mobile workforce. It is critical for business operators to have actionable data from their offices and assets to better manage the performance and maintenance of network equipment. Remote surveillance using Internet of Things (IoT) sensors offers a number of benefits to help improve efficiency, including employee safety by avoiding unnecessary site visits and equipment checks , reduce network outages and downtime, and reduce the costs of premature equipment failure.

The solutions:

● Meraki MT Sensors monitor indoor environments and information technology infrastructure. Three models of cloud-managed devices – MT10, MT12 and MT20 – provide real-time data on indoor temperature, humidity, water leaks and property/room access.

● Vision of industrial assets Sensors monitor Operational Technology (OT) assets and facilities in outdoor and indoor industrial spaces. Bundled into a new cloud-based management dashboard that fosters actionable visibility from sensors to the network, the IP65 and IP67 rated sensors are pre-integrated with the Cisco LoRaWAN IoT Gateway and provide information on temperature, humidity , supervision of vibrations and lighting levels of equipment and installations.

“Remote visibility and operation has become increasingly important, not only for efficiency, but also to effectively manage the post-COVID-19 industrial surroundings,” said Kevin Prouty, Group Vice President, IDC Energy and Manufacturing Insights. . “Remote monitoring solutions that are quick and easy to deploy across the enterprise, from IT to OT, provide clear business value. New Cisco Industrial Asset Vision and Cisco Meraki MT solutions potentially simplify deployments and move toward unifying the data needed for strong decision making. Industrial companies need their data to be managed in silos and to be secure from endpoint to information point of view,” he added.

Customers in a wide range of industries, including utilities, oil and gas, education, healthcare, manufacturing, and retail, have already implemented these solutions to improve their daily operations and mitigate business interruptions and costly downtime. inactivity.

“The expansion of Cisco Meraki’s simplicity into our physical security and asset management has immediately improved our ability to keep our systems up and running and support school operations,” said CR Hiestand, systems and network administrator for the School District. Reading. “Before deploying the Meraki MT, we were unable to track data trends that would allow us to take preventative action when an incident such as a defective air conditioning unit occurred. Now, we are alerted as soon as the temperature rises above a specific threshold and can immediately address HVAC equipment failure, to ensure there is no network outage for any of our 20,000 students and staff.”

“For numerous companies and their IT teams, real-time visibility into critical infrastructure is imperative to keeping their businesses running smoothly,” said George Bentinck, director of product management, Cisco Meraki. “Meraki MT provides real-time insight and monitoring across IT environments through just one cloud dashboard, providing customers with the signing simplicity they have come to expect from Meraki.”

“Connecting sensors to the network and gaining access to multiple dashboards and their correlated data has become an increasingly difficult requirement at scale in today’s OT environments,” said Vikas Butaney, general manager of IoT at Cisco. “With this announcement, Cisco is taking another step forward in providing customers and partners with easy-to-use, scalable solutions that provide end-to-end visibility and automation.”
